Rio, 30 (Agência Brasil - Apr) - The number of Brazilian companies formally constituted, (that means to be registered in the National Register of Legal Entities (CNPJ) grew 20.7% through the years 1996 and 1999. That is what the study of the "Central Register of Enterprises,” says, as issued today by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In quantity, the companies rose in this period from 3,206,933 to 3,872,075.
The highest growth rate (34.9%) was in the service sector, with a total of 359,951 new businesses. The Central Register of Enterprises of the IBGE also reveals drop in average monthly wage paid to workers in the formal economy, which fell from 5.6% in 1996 to 5.2% in 1999. The study also shows that companies with up to 9 persons employed represent 92.2% and 11.9% of employed persons.
